Walter Smith, Age 23

Private, 201974, 1/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.

Walter was yet another of the Dawley lads that although born in Dawley had moved away and was living in Heywood, Lancashire at the time of joining the army.

He was killed in action during the German spring offensive of 1918, falling on April 5th 1918, His body was never identified and his name appears on the Arras memorial to the missing on Bay 5.

Walter's birth was registered in the third quarter of 1894, his parents was Roger and Mary Ann Smith who in 1901 were living at Pool Hill, in the 1911 census the family had moved to 10, Station Road, Horsehay, Walter was 16 and working as a “Striker Blacksmiths” in the last quarter of 1915 Walter married Jane Whatmough at Bury, Lancashire, there son was born on the 19th June 1916, Walter's war pension was paid to his widow and child at 118, Miller Street, Heywood, Lancashire, England.

Walter Smith on Arras memorial is very feint, his name can just be defined above ‘Sowerby’.
